Does a Tire Balance or Tire Rotation Really Help?

December 16, 2013

Little things can create big annoyances, but with a little effort, they can entirely be avoided. This especially applies to a vehicle's tire balance and tire rotation.

If you are looking for quality Exhaust Systems Billings MT than your search can be over now with our Precision Auto Repair Billings MT   shop. Also find Tire Rotation Billings MT mechanic to solve your car problems.

• Why is correct Tire Balance important?

When a wheel and tire rotate, they exert a centrifugal force on the axle that depends on the location of their center of mass and the orientation of their moment of inertia. This is referred to as balance, imbalance, or unbalance. Before leaving the factory, tires are checked for excessive static imbalance and dynamic imbalance using automatic tire balance machines. The balance is checked again when the tires are mounted to the wheel, either on brand-new vehicles, or when purchased at an auto shop. Excessive imbalance is corrected by applying balance weights to the wheels to counteract the imbalance.

A wheel balancing machine can detect as little as 1/4 ounce difference in weight around the wheel. Because that tiny amount of weight travels around the axle hundreds of times a minute, it creates enough momentum to cause serious vibration. If more than one tire is out of balance, the vibration is significantly worse. Out of balance tires can be felt by the driver by an annoying vibration transmitted through the steering wheel. Unbalanced tires put uneven pressure on the treads, possibly resulting in tires that get too hot and wear unevenly, as well as putting a strain on the wheel bearings and suspension system.

• Why is regular Tire Rotation important?

Tire rotation is the procedure of moving tires to different car positions, such as front-to-rear, in order to even out the tread wear. This helps extend the life of your tires, keeping the ones with the most tread on the traction wheels of the vehicle for optimum driving and stopping performance.

To help you remember, mark your calendar to have a tire rotation service performed every 5 to 6 thousand mile intervals. For convenience, you could schedule a tire rotation at every other oil change interval.
